First-Year Residents Participate in Comprehensive Training at STRATUS

As part of an ongoing initiative at merging the highest quality in medical education while maximizing patient safety, BWH is providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary simulation-based patient safety program for all incoming first-year residents at the STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation.
This new training program at STRATUS served as a confidence builder for new residents and an opportunity to hone their clinical skills in several areas. Each incoming first-year resident spent a full day using high-fidelity simulators to practice their skills in central venous access, arterial line placement and suturing under the supervision of attending physicians, fellows and senior residents. This orientation program also provided instruction and practice in airway management and use of biphasic defibrillators. Lectures on crisis resource management, needle safety and infection control rounded out the program.
“This year's more extensive orientation was built on the success of last year's central line training,” said Charles Pozner, MD, medical director of STRATUS. “This training is consistent with BWH's focus on safe, high-quality clinical care. The program at STRATUS provides incoming residents with exposure to common, high- to moderate-risk procedures in a nonthreatening environment and allows them to learn the proper techniques without jeopardizing the safety of actual patients.”
