BW/F Vice President of Human Resources

After an extensive national search, Brigham and Women's and Faulkner Hospitals announced that Julie Celano, MS, MEd, has accepted the position of vice president of Human Resources. Celano, who currently serves as vice president of HR at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, will begin at BW/F on May 1.
Celano will build upon the important work begun by Arthur Mombourquette, interim vice president of Human Resources, and Human Resources colleagues to ensure that the BW/F HR team is engaged in understanding and meeting the individual and collective needs of the workforce. She will also further the work of the hospital's senior leadership teams to build an engaged workforce reflective of the patients, families and communities we serve.
Celano has served as vice president of HR at Fox Chase Cancer Center since 2009. She was responsible for leading the HR team and partnering with senior leadership in all domains, including clinical, research and administration, as well as strategic planning and implementation of HR initiatives. Celano led numerous cultural change initiatives and leadership development programs.
Prior to joining Fox Chase, Celano served as vice president of Human Resources for ACE - INA Holdings, Inc., a publically traded global property and casualty insurance firm. She has also held leadership positions at Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company and St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, N.J. Celano began her career as a physiologist.
She received a Master of Science in Organizational Development from the University of Pennsylvania, and a certificate in Professional Human Resouces Management from Villanova University. Celano also holds a master's degree in Education/Physiology and a bachelor's degree in Psychology/Speech Pathology from the University of Pittsburgh.
Faulkner Hospital, Chief of Medicine

Scott Schissel, MD, has been appointed chief of Medicine at Faulkner Hospital, effective June 15, 2012.
Schissel currently serves as chief of Pulmonary Medicine at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. He completed his medical residency in Internal Medicine at BWH, as well as a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons - Columbia University.
In his role as chief, Schissel will be responsible for ensuring the Faulkner Hospital's Department of Medicine is aligned with the overall strategic direction of the greater BW/F enterprise, and that its clinical operation, patient quality, patient safety and clinical outcomes are and remain superb. In addition, Schissel will be responsible for the educational mission of the medicine service to ensure Faulkner remains a coveted site of learning for students, residents and faculty. He will serve as an associate program director for the Department of Medicine's preliminary internship selection process and as an advisor to the preliminary residents and many other trainees.
Faulkner Hospital, Chief of Orthopedics

Brandon Earp, MD, has been appointed chief of Orthopedics at Faulkner Hospital, effective immediately.
She is a graduate of the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program and was a fellow in the Brigham and Women's/Children's Hospital Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship. Earp earned her medical degree from Stanford Medical College.
Earp, who has been on staff at BW/F for seven years, has a very active practice in hand and upper extremity surgery, both at Brigham and Women's and Faulkner Hospitals. She also served as co-chair of the BWH Physician's Council and as a member of the advisory council for the Brigham and Women's Outreach Program with the Indian Health Service.
Earp succeeds Michael Wilson, MD, who left the position in October.
BWH Division of Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care

Selwyn Rogers, MD, MPH, FACS, will leave his position as chief of BWH's Division of Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care to become professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine and surgeon in-chief of Temple University Health System, effective July 16.
Rogers will lead the Temple Department of Surgery's efforts to enhance the patient care experience, expand surgical programs and ensure quality outcomes within a patient-centered environment of care.
Rogers has served in his current BWH role since 2003. He helped to develop the Center for Surgery and Public Health and was its first director. Rogers has published multiple articles on health care disparities and has been instrumental in implementing programs to reduce disparities in care. Most recently, he partnered with the Center for Community Health and Health Equity to develop a violence intervention program to support trauma patients at BWH.
A few of Rogers' many achievements at BWH include being appointed SICU director in 2001, and growing the multidisciplinary group of intensivists from six to 23, while extending a collaborative SICU model of coverage in the thoracic and cardiac ICUs. In 2003, he was appointed division chief of Trauma, Burn, and Surgical Critical Care, where he has more than doubled the cadre of acute care surgeons. He also helped to develop the Center for Surgery and Public Health and was its first director. His commitment to quality improvement, disparities research, and improving access to surgical care globally are just a few of his many enduring contributions.
A celebration will be scheduled before Rogers' departure. While a national search is conducted for a new division chief, the following faculty members will serve in interim leadership roles:
- Francis D. Moore, Jr., MD, will serve as interim TBSCC Division Chief
- Vihas Patel, MD, will serve as interim SICU Director
- Edward Kelly, MD, will serve as interim SICU Fellowship Director
- Reza Askari, MD, will serve as interim ACS liaison to South Shore Hospital
Center for Professionalism and Peer Support
The Center for Professionalism and Peer Support has expanded its team to provide more comprehensive services to the BWH community.
Lawrence C. Tsen, MD, vice chair of Faculty Development and Education and director of Anesthesia in the Center for Reproductive Medicine, has been appointed associate director in the BWH Center for Professionalism and Peer Support. Tsen comes to the center with an extensive background working with faculty and trainees on issues of professionalism and peer support.

Channing Division of Network Medicine

Edwin Silverman, MD, was named chief of the Channing Division of Network Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
Silverman begins his new role on July 1, and succeeds Dennis Kasper, MD, who has been division chief of the Channing Laboratory since 1996.
The new Division of Network Medicine will include the Respiratory, Genetic and Environmental Epidemiology Unit of the Channing Laboratory, currently led by Scott Weiss, MD; the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Unit of the Channing Laboratory, led by Meir Stampfer, MD, DrPH, MPH; and a new Systems Pathobiology Unit. The Channing Division of Network Medicine will use an integrated, network-based, systems biology-driven approach to define the etiology of complex diseases.
A graduate of Washington University School of Medicine, Silverman completed his residency in internal medicine at BWH, where he also served as a fellow in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Silverman is currently an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
His research focuses on the genetics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. He has been the principal investigator of multiple NIH-funded COPD genetics studies, including the Boston Early-Onset COPD Study, the NETT Genetics Ancillary Study, the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Genetic Modifiers Study, and the Transcontinental COPD Genetics Study. He is also one of two principal investigators of the COPDGene Study. His research group has combined field, laboratory and analytical approaches to address the challenging problems involved in elucidating the genetic influences in complex lung diseases. Their work has involved a broad range of genetic analysis approaches, including familial aggregation analysis, linkage analysis, association studies, rare variant analysis, epigenetic studies and integrative genomics. Recently, they have focused on identifying the functional variants within COPD genetic loci identified by genetic association studies and investigating the biological impact of these variants. They are also working to dissect COPD heterogeneity by integrating CT imaging phenotypes and genetic variation.
Biomedical Research Institute

Lesley Solomon, MBA, who previously served as director of e-philanthropy in the BWH Development Office, was appointed director of Strategy and Innovation for the Biomedical Research Institute.
In her new role, Solomon aims to increase awareness of the depth and breadth of research at BWH, both internally and externally. She will partner with Marketing & Planning, Development, Communication & Public Affairs and Research, Ventures and Licensing to help provide a clear voice and strong identity for the research community and create new funding opportunities to sustain the research enterprise.
In her previous position within BWH Development, Solomon developed the hospital's first online fundraising strategy and launched the Stork Fund to support healthy pregnancies and babies. Solomon also has served in leadership positions for companies including Yoga Works and Gather.com, where she focused on marketing, business development, strategy and communications.
Solomon earned her MBA from Harvard Business School and her BA from Cornell University.
