Gottlieb Presents at PCERC Forum

Partners President and CEO Gary Gottlieb, MD, visited BWH to present at the March 11 Patient-Centered Comparative Effectiveness Research Center (PCERC) seminar series.

"I'm thrilled that the Biomedical Research Institute has created PCERC to bring together staff to help us better translate the findings of science into the emerging health care system," he said. "This will help to inform the way we deliver care in a thoughtful, more patient-centered and focused way."

Gottlieb presented on strategic approaches to embracing patient-centered care and outcomes in the context of constricted resources. He discussed health care costs and reform, and how Partners will continue to deliver on its mission, despite constricted resources and the impact of rising costs and policy changes.  

"How do we control our destiny in the context of all of these policy changes, and how do we strategically use the exceptional assets we have?" he asked.

Gottlieb outlined Partners' strategic approaches to these challenges, including care redesign and patient affordability efforts. "Our vision is to provide superior patient-centered care," he said. "The reality is that we have been doing provider-centered care with lots of elements that are very patient-centered, but the system hasn't focused on the people we are serving overall."

One way Partners is focusing more on patients is by tracking outcomes that matter most to patients. Neil Wagle, MD, is leading the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMS) initiative. This work tracks meaningful outcomes, such as whether a patient can climb stairs without feeling pain or lie down without becoming short of breath. By measuring these outcomes, care providers can begin to figure out how to improve patients' quality of life.
