Dear Colleagues:
The Orthopedic and Arthritis Center's mission is to provide the highest quality of integrated care for patients with musculoskeletal disease; develop and administer therapies enriched by progressive research; and train the next generation of clinical and research leaders in musculoskeletal care.
Accomplishing these goals calls for delivering the right care at the right place by enlisting three sites in our distributed campus. BWH's main campus will serve as the primary tertiary care setting, where ongoing refurbishments and upgrades to outpatient areas will be taking place throughout the remainder of the fiscal year. Additionally, new Orthopedic operating rooms are planned for FY08.
Faulkner's campus will appropriately serve as the secondary care setting, at which future plans for a new outpatient building will better facilitate ambulatory, OR and faculty growth in Orthopedics and Rheumatology. 850 Boylston will also be a location for ambulatory care for this Center of Excellence. The next fiscal year will bring about further expansion at 850 Boylston. In addition to these three sites, expansion plans are slated for the Braintree area to serve as a community extension setting. Specialist recruitment is due to coincide with such improvements and expansions.
The programs involved in this strategic plan include the core programs of rheumatology, outpatient orthopedics and inpatient orthopedics. These will be coupled with niche programs that focus on lupus, early arthritis, dermatologic arthritis, spondylitis, cartilage repair and oncology care.
Among all programs, an area of opportunity exists to better serve women. Gender specific programs will be created in the areas of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, pregnancy-related autoimmune diseases, sports medicine, physiatry and lupus.
The effective collaboration between Orthopedics and Rheumatology, led by Drs. Thomas Thornhill and Jonathan Coblyn have set and will continue and help develop a mature vision for the Orthopedics and Arthritis Center of Excellence.
Look for more updates on activity surrounding this center of excellence, as well as the other four, in future issues of BWH Medical Staff News .
Sincerely yours,

Steven Seltzer, MD
