New System for Patient Coverage
BWH is rolling out a new system, the Partners Enterprise Patient List (PEPL), which will connect each in patient with a primary responding clinician (RC). BWH defines the responding clinician as the physician, physician assistant, nurse midwife or nurse practitioner who can quickly take action after the receipt of a critical alert.
This improves on the “who’s covering” option on BICS with real time coverage data that is maintained by the responding clinician at the point of patient care as part of the clinical handoff. Pod Monitor and other systems at BWH will draw from the coverage data in PEPL. Pod Monitor will display a new column identifying the responding clinician allowing clinical staff to click on the RC name to send him or her a page.
PEPL will be a new product found under your PC’s Start Menu and Partner’s Applications.
The PEPL roll out has phased in. Between September and December, it has been rolled out to Orthopedics, Gynecology, Surgery, Neurology, Interventional Radiology, Urology, Otolaryngology, Obstetrics and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Pain Medicine. In Janauary, it will extend to Medicine, Cardiology and Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant units.
During the rollout period, the RC column on the pod monitor only will have information for services that have begun using PEPL; the column should be completely populated by the end of January. PEPL will not track coverage for patients in the ED where a system already exists, nor in the Newborn Medicine or NICU nurseries until a BWH coverage policy is agreed upon for those areas.Send questions and feedback to BWHRespondingClinician@partners.org
