Analesa Baraka, BSN, RN, PCCN of Tower 12A, received her PCCN certification.
Patrice K. Nicholas, PhD, RN, DNSc, APRN, program manager for Global Health and Academic Partnerships in the Center for Nursing Excellence, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at Fitchburg State College’s 114th Commencement May 22.
Diane Campbell, BSN, RN ALM, and Carol Luppi, BSN, RN, ALM, of the Center for Nursing Excellence, both graduated in May from Harvard University with a Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies concentrating in Educational Technologies Degree. Both received awards for academic excellence, and Luppi also received the Class Marshall Award for academic distinction.
Sheila Connelly, BSN, RN, OCN, of Radiation Oncology, earned her BSN from UMass Boston and her Oncology Nurse Certification (OCN) from the Oncology Nursing Society.

Posters, Presentations and Publications

Margaret Costello |
Margaret Costello, PhD, RN, nurse in-charge on Tower 15CD, presented a poster, “The Use of Simulation to Teach Nursing Students How to Provide Spiritual Care to Hospitalized Patients,” at the 11th International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare in New Orleans. Costello also published “Predictors of Success on Medication Calculation Tests,” in the January/February 2011 issue of Nurse Educator.
Kathleen Ryan Avery, MSN, RN, CCRN, clinical educator for Shapiro 9 East, CCU, and Carol Daddio Pierce, MS, RN, CCRN, ACNP, clinical educator in the MICU, were part of a BWH task force that published “Implementation of a Hospital-wide Protocol for Induced Hypothermia Following Successfully Resuscitated Cardiac Arrest,” in the December 2010 issue of Critical Pathways in Cardiology: A Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine.
BWH was well-represented during the International Association of Clinical Research Nurses Annual Meeting in Bethesda, Md., where the Center for Clinical Investigation’s Judi Lauerman, BSN, RN, and Rita O’Donnell, MSN, RN, nurse educator, presented the poster, “A Comparison of Skin Preparations for Insertion of Extended Duration Peripheral IVs in the Clinical Research Setting.” Lauerman also teamed up with Sheila Driscoll, MSN, RN, nursing director, to present two other posters: “Clinical Research Nurse Narratives: Uncovering the Skills and Knowledge in the Specialty” and “Catalyst Clinical Research Nurse Committee- Development of a Multi-Institutional CTSA Staff Nurse Practice Group.”
