As we embark on the challenges and opportunities that are presented to us in the New Year, there is much we have to be thankful for in 2001. It was a tumultuous year to be sure, filled with tragedy and despair, strength and character. We witnessed unique events that culminated in a renewed spirit for giving and a rededication and focus on those around us. Throughout it all, your passion for providing care has been remarkable.
As we forge a new path for 2002, we are keenly aware of the dynamic nature of the healthcare environment. Around us are countless examples of hardship and pitfalls. To minimize these hazards would be a mistake as we move forward together. As a result, in November we announced a new strategic vision for Brigham and Women’s Hospital geared toward keeping us focused and directed in a sea of change (see story on page 8).
The BWH Strategic Plan is strongly supported by hospital leadership and provides a road map of issues, such as service mix, length of stay, cost improvement, revenue enhancements, outpatient services and network development. All of these initiatives are designed to reinforce our core mission of providing exceptional patient care, landmark research and world-class mentoring, while maintaining a deep commitment to our community.
I would like to invite each of you to learn more about the plan and to work with us to ensure its successful implementation. As issues grow more complex and intense, it has never been more important to have a plan to guide us. We will continue to update you on the progress of this essential initiative.
Sincerely,

Nancy Kruger, DNSc, RN
