September. We used to think about September differently. The waning days of summer, the long embrace of Labor Day weekend, the excitement of children returning to school, the anticipation of turning leaves as the fresh breath of fall chilled the evening breeze.
September has always been a time to reassess and to start anew. It has been a month of recommitment and dedication to the goals, vision and values we all share. As nurses, perhaps, this time of year was more pronounced as we looked with great anticipation to the challenges ahead.
Last year, however, shaped our perspectives of September in a lasting way. Our quiet associations of this transitional month were suddenly lost in the wake of unprecedented, national tragedy. Nightmarish images cascaded into our lives. Instead of looking forward to the promise of the fall we were surrounded by anxiety and uncertainty. The warm days were transformed into a lingering cold.
While we spend time this month reflecting on the events of last year, we should not lose sight of the very nature of our profession. We are caregivers with an extraordinary purpose to heal and soothe those who may be suffering. As I think back over the course of the last 12 months, I know that our world has changed in an inalterable manner. However, I am equally certain that our role as nurses in this remarkable place has never been more important. Thank you for making such a meaningful contribution.
Sincerely,

Nancy Kruger, DNSc, RN
