The American Burn Association in August re-verified the BWH Burn Center distinguishing BWH as a facility prepared to care for some of the sickest patient populations.
“We are very pleased to have the BWH Burn Center re-verified by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association,” Dennis P. Orgill, MD, PhD, director of the Burn Center, said. “We appreciate the dedication of the burn team members, including physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, dieticians, administrators and others, who work so hard, especially as the Burn Center leadership changed recently. As we look towards the future, we plan to bring the newest innovations in care to our patients.”
During the day-long survey, two representatives from the American Burn Association conducted a review of the clinical care provided at the Burn Center. They examined patient records, interviewed staff and patients about care and toured the Tower-7D Burn Intensive Care Unit, 7AB Intermediate Care Unit, Emergency Department, Operating Room and Outpatient Clinic. Physicians, nurses and staff from Nutrition, Care Coordination, Rehabilitation Services, Social Work and others who care for burn patients are involved in the verification process, which takes place every three years.
The American Burn Association also is interested in the education BWH provides to referral hospitals, which complete initial burn care and then refer patients to BWH. The Burn Center offers Advanced Burn Life Support courses, burn lectures and routine feedback to referral hospitals.
In addition to their work with patients, many who work in the BWH Burn Center also participate in community outreach about burn injury prevention.
