A number of initiatives being implemented as result of the Post-Partum Service Excellence program seem to be making an impact on the satisfaction of new mothers and their family members. Obstetric-specific nursing scores in the Press, Ganey patient satisfaction survey tool continue to rise.
Improvements on the Connors Center floors eight through ten are continuing to focus on meeting patient needs. Each post-partum floor has implemented a team overview reporting system, whereby all nurses discuss and review patient needs prior to each change of shift and make adjustments in nursing assignments if needed. In addition to creating more teamwork and cohesion among the whole nursing staff, this process takes a more careful look at handling all patient needs.
As part of the team overview process, each post-partum floor is beginning to incorporate the “buddy system.” The new system allows for each nurse to be assigned a back-up nurse. That way, each patient has two dedicated nurses. In the event that the primary nurse is tending to another mom or newborn, the “buddy” nurse can easily be available to the patient, allowing for more consistency and familiarity for the patient.
Other initiatives underway as part of the Post-Partum Service Excellence program include Commitment to Care, a newly stated professional philosophy among post-partum nurses, to which performance measures are now being attached; upgrades to or replacement of the current call light system in order to make response to patient needs more timely and effective; and manager rounds, during which nurse managers solicit direct feedback from patients and family members on their care.
