“Good communication is essential to the efficient provision of effective medical care,” wrote Ileana Jimenez-Garcia, director, Interpreter Services in her proposal to the Friends of BWH.
With the assistance of an interpreter, patients are empowered to participate in their own care and often their anxieties are relieved. However, while informing patients about medications, treatments and discharge instructions, BWH’s interpreters can, at times, “literally be at a loss for words,” according to Jimenez. With the backing of the Friends of BWH, the department will purchase a new Spanish Medical Dictionary, Thesaurus and Grammar book, along with similar Portuguese, Russian, Haitian Creole and Somali phrase books and dictionaries.
