Tara Cousineau, RNWhen a woman is admitted to BWH’s Labor and Delivery floor, she would be lucky to find Tara Cousineau, RN, staff nurse, on the job. Cousineau’s philosophy about caring for patients is simple. It all begins with a smile.
“I find that a warm approach and big smile helps put patients at ease,” said Cousineau, who did not stop smiling while describing the love she has for her work. “I always knew I wanted to care for people, so being a nurse was a natural fit.”
Cousineau’s warm personality and approachability are not just part of her job. As described by her nurse manager, Maggie Hickey, RN, “being friendly, helpful and sweet, is just how Tara is, it isn’t anything you can teach.”
While Labor and Delivery does not typically hire new graduates, Cousineau was a unique case. During college she commuted to BWH from Rhode Island to work as a unit coordinator and gain experience in the hospital setting. “We noticed her outstanding customer service right away and were so happy when she applied for a position after graduation,” said Hickey. “She is a breath of fresh air and has blossomed in this role.” Cousineau, who will celebrate her second year at BWH this September, has been recognized for her hard work and service by colleagues and patients alike. In one letter written by a recent patient, she was described as “exemplifying true professionalism.” The new mother wrote, “I wasn’t sure if anyone could be as nice as her.”
The perfect complement to her warm smile, Cousineau is bright and intelligent. She excels at coaching new moms during anxious and emotional births – answering their questions, outlining the various procedures and being alert to their diverse needs. While describing their care, Cousineau is able to provide comfort by educating the patients in a calm and confident manner. And, when she reaches to hold their hand, she comforts them as a friend, as well.
