Blood Donor Center Hours What inspired you to give blood to the MGH/BWH employee challenge?
The BWH/MGH Employee Blood Donor Challenge comes to a close next Friday, September 10, ending the fun and friendly competition held annually for a serious purpose—to help fill end-of-summer supply shortages.
“Our need for blood is critical to support the patients that we care for each day,” said Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, president. “We are very grateful to our many year-round BWH employee donors. The BWH/MGH Employee Blood Donor Challenge is the perfect opportunity to involve more of our staff in filling a critical need for blood.”
According to Linda Perry, lead blood donor recruiter, aside from the seasonal shortfall, the need for blood is ever increasing. Factors driving the increased demand include an aging population and the greater number of blood transfusions required for advanced medical care. Over the next several years, with BWH’s planned growth, the need for blood donation will become even more acute.
Jaime Cronin of Middleborough represents a typical visitor to the Blood Donor Center. Cronin accompanied a friend for pre-operative testing and decided to help save a life while she was there. “Instead of sitting in the waiting room, I wanted to do something worthwhile,” she said.
The donation procedure is approximately 45 to 60 minutes and employees do not have to wait until a lunch hour or break to donate, as BWH allows all employees the opportunity to give blood during working hours. “In preparing for donation, we ask all donors to eat high iron foods, including green, leafy vegetables, red meat and a vitamin C source within the week prior to donation,” said Perry. “The night before you give blood it is important that you get a good night’s sleep and increase your fluid intake with non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated beverages.”
BWH still needs many donors to edge out MGH in the Employee Blood Donor Challenge. Roll up your sleeve to help that cause, but most importantly, to give the gift of life to the many patients who need blood to survive. Employee donors receive a free t-shirt, special desserts and are also eligible for giveaways and raffles during the competition.
The Blood Donor Center is located on the Pike, across from the Ambulatory Services lobby, and walk-ins are always welcome. For information, call 617-732-6620.
