Linda Jo Stern, MPH, director, PROMESA, returned to Honduras in August to lay the groundwork for this fall’s PROMESA program. Founded by Stern, the BWH international health program is an extension of the BWH Medical Mission. The program brings medical residents from BWH to the local health centers and provides a wide range of community health projects, training and service learning in the very poor communities of Central America.
The program evolved from a brigade model that sent physicians, nurses, midwives and dentists to the country to provide care. Now volunteers also work alongside local health care providers to make sustainable changes related to health. Projects include improving housing, preparing a training program for local midwives, working with supporters to provide clean water, and working with medical students from both countries to provide health education. In addition, BWH medical and pediatric residents provide needed medical services in these remote regions.
“The communities are thrilled to be working with PROMESA. They are impressed that a hospital in the United States believes in the importance of working overseas, “ said Stern.
