A ribbon-cutting ceremony last month marked the completion of the new Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Faulkner Hospital.
“This new clinic exemplifies our latest pioneering efforts to enhance the exceptional, community-based care offered at Faulkner Hospital,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, during the May 23 ceremony.
The 13,000 square-foot facility unites Faulkner’s medical oncology and hematology services with those of the DF/BWCC in an expanded, collaborative outpatient service. The new center also provides expanded access to clinical trials available at the DF/BWCC.
The center will serve current Faulkner cancer patients, and DF/BWCC patients with breast, gastrointestinal or thoracic cancers have the option to receive their care in the new space as well. Mary Barry, of Canton, is one DF/BWCC patient who is opting to continue her treatments at the new Faulkner location, which opens to patients mid-June. “I’m not changing hospitals, just locations,” said Barry, who finds the Faulkner location in Jamaica Plain more convenient than traveling to the Longwood Medical Area.
Lawrence Shulman, MD, chief medical officer for DFCI, said the unit signifies a marriage of academic and community medicine, and DFCI President Ed Benz Jr., MD, described it as an emblem of future cancer care. “Unique as it is to have three institutions come together like this, we have shown that the partnership gives us an enhanced way to provide care and do clinical research,” he said.
The facility is twice the size of Faulkner’s previous oncology unit, and offers expanded space for infusion, exams and reception and support services. Patients and families were included in the planning process to make sure the space is friendly and supportive.
“Patients previously served at the Longwood campus can expect the same level of patient- and family-centered care with a focus on safety and quality improvements, with the additional benefit of our convenient community setting,” said David Trull, president and CEO of Faulkner Hospital.
