The doors to BWH's Medical Library on Thorn 1 are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but the library's vast resources are available 24-7 to the hospital's physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and all other staff on their desktops.
“There is an awful lot of information available through our online resources accessible on BWH's Intranet site,” Medical Library Director Anne Fladger said. All staff can access various databases like Ovid, EBSCO and PubMed and a large number of medical, nursing and specialty journals. Also, the site's lengthy A to Z listing soon will be easier to navigate.
The library is reaching out beyond its traditional users such as medical staff, interns and residents, as more and more nurses and physical therapists are taking advantage of the library's resources in the last year.
“We have two articles pending publication in the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, thanks to Anne's help,” said Reginald Wilcox III, PT, DPT, clinical supervisor, Rehabilitation Services in Outpatient Services.
Wilcox noted the library has been invaluable in helping Rehabilitation Services with a number of research initiatives and current journal searches as the department makes clinical decisions and updates its standards of care. “The library and online resources make us better and more efficient in practicing evidence based medicine,” Wilcox said.
