College-bound Tarita Jamesa Hall smiled wide as Martin Leber, MD, handed her a plaque and scholarship check last week at the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center. Hall, a patient of SJPHC, won the health center's Martin Leber Scholarship Award, which will help her as she begins studying biology at Pine Manor College this month.
"I've been interested in medicine since the third grade," explained Hall. "That's why I'm going to study biology. It's nice to know what you can do to help someone else."
Jamaica Plain resident Mikhail Jikaran also won the scholarship but was unable to make the ceremony. He will attend Boston University this fall.
High school students who are patients of SJPHC and wish to pursue higher education are eligible for the $500 scholarship. It was established in honor of the many years Leber dedicated to SJPHC as a pediatrician. Leber presented the award alongside SJPHC's Michael Lambert, MD, medical director, and Tom Kieffer, executive director.
