For his profound influence in improving patient safety worldwide, BWH’s William Churchill, MS, RPh, executive director of Pharmacy, last week was the country’s sole recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Leadership Award in Health-System Pharmacy Practice. This prestigious award is presented annually by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
“More than six million doses of medication are given at BWH each year, and each is given in a fashion reflective of extraordinary comprehension of safety,” Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD, said during a reception at BWH this week in Churchill’s honor. “Bill has an innovative approach and a can-do attitude about everything. He is among the most nurturing mentors we have.”
BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, said, “Bill has the extraordinary ability to find wonderful people to work with, which is reflected by the wonderful people in Pharmacy.”
Churchill is firmly committed to his staff. “My staff means the most to me,” said Churchill, who joined BWH 32 years ago as a pharmacy intern. “Every day, they motivate me to do better.”
In recent years, Churchill has played a major role at BWH in improving the safety and efficiency of medication administration systems and expanding the role of clinical pharmacy specialists through the use of medication safety technology. He is sought after around the world to present on medication safety. He chairs many committees at BWH and Partners dedicated to improving medication safety.
Churchill’s family, friends and colleagues gathered at BWH this week to celebrate the award, which he received at the annual ASHP conference in Las Vegas. John Fanikos, RPh, MBA, assistant director of Pharmacy, noted Churchill’s unwavering dedication to his family while always fulfilling his duties.
“He has shared with us their stories every step of the way, from their births to their successes and failures. He has made me a better dad because he is a role model in achieving the balance between work and family,” Fanikos said.
