Southern Jamaica Plain’s Eileen Mary Costello, MD, is one of several Boston physicians teaming up with the office of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to produce Parenting In Action, a local television show that helps new parents deal with the stress of parenting and outlines the many services the City of Boston offers.
“Throughout my career, I have been passionate about working with the community,” said Costello, who has been a pediatrician for 20 years. “This program allows me to help parents in a different format and with a little more time than we typically have in an office visit.”
The show is part of Menino’s initiative to close the academic achievement gap by offering parents information about healthy development and early learning for children from birth through kindergarten entry.
The show focuses on advice that parents can put into action. Guests on the program provide tips and highlight resources ranging from the summer Read Boston Story Mobile to winter heating assistance for low-income families.
Costello, a member of the show’s advisory board, already has appeared in three shows, offering expert advice to parents.
The 25-minute talk show runs Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. on Comcast channel 9 and RCN channel 15. Episodes are available online at www.parentinginaction.org. The mayor’s office also plans to distribute DVD copies of the program in English and Spanish to childcare programs, health centers and ESL classes.
