As Frank cut into a ceremonial cake last month, she thanked the staff of the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center for the creation of 110 private oncology patient rooms in the Tower.
“You do an amazing job in maintaining the utmost in quality care for our patients,” said Frank, PhD, the senior co-chair of the DF/BWCC Adult Patient and Family Advisory Council, who visits regularly with bone marrow transplant patients. “The care you give is extraordinary.”
The renovated Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant units are located on Tower 4BC, 5AB, 6ABCD, 7AB and 12C. Over the past year, staff and leadership have worked together to create the private rooms and move in—a major achievement, especially since the oncology pods also transitioned from a paper medical record to the hospital’s eMAR system in the fall.
Last month’s celebration was hosted by the Patient and Family Advisory Council to thank staff for maintaining their commitment to high quality care while the units were undergoing renovations and moves.
“The team that makes up the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center has done a tremendous amount of work to make this happen,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, senior vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. “Every day, they provide outstanding care, and to hear this feedback from the patients they serve is a true testament to their care and compassion.”
DFCI President Ed Benz, MD, lauded the teamwork of BWH and DFCI in the creation of the private rooms. “This is a wonderful example of the power of our collaboration—it is something that can only happen by working together,” he said.
The ability for patients and families to have private rooms during their journeys with cancer is important, as evidenced by the reaction that Janet Porter received when she told the Patient and Family Advisory Council that there would be 110 private beds.
“People cried, and people broke into applause,” said Porter, the chief operating officer for DFCI. “I wish you all could have been there.”
