Miriam Mahler, last year's Thomson Leadership Award recipient, checks in on the proud new parents of a baby girl during rounds on CWN-5.
Since receiving the Thomson Compassionate Care Leadership Award last year, Miriam Mahler, CNM, MPH, has been second-guessing her every move—but in a good way, she says.
“Receiving this award makes me stop and think, over and over, about whether what I am doing is best for a particular patient’s care, whether it is the most compassionate thing I can do,” said Mahler, program director for Midwifery in the departments of Nursing and OB/GYN, who was honored for her compassion and commitment to the many patients she serves at BWH and 10 community health centers. “As care providers, we constantly should reflect on whether we are doing the best thing for the patient or if we could do something differently.”
Compassion is an important quality of leadership for Mahler. “As a leader, you serve as a role model, and you can really set the tone for everyone in your own department and in the departments you interact with by showing compassion in your words and actions,” she said.
With the nomination period for this year’s Thomson Awards closing March 19, Mahler encouraged BWHers to submit nominations on behalf of their colleagues for both the leadership and scholarship awards.
“One of the things that the award did was to really shine a spotlight on the whole team of midwives, not just me,” she said. “This award showcases not just a person, but also the departments and the work of teams.”
