With $126 million raised toward the hospital’s $200-million capital campaign goal, Brigham and Women’s leaders and physicians traveled to Palm Beach on Feb. 6. During a weekend packed with special events, they thanked hospital supporters and answered their questions on a variety of health topics.
“Your generosity helps Brigham and Women’s maintain its ranking as one of the finest medical centers in the world,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, addressing more than 225 guests at a dinner at Mar-a-Lago Thursday.
BWH patient Gayle Schumacher recounted how caregivers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit saved her son, Weston, who had been born at 25 weeks gestation and weighing 1 pound, 11.5 ounces. “Thank you for saving our family,” she said.
The following evening, Gottlieb and Surgery Chairman Michael Zinner, MD, thanked leadership donors at a dinner at the home of Elaine and Gerald Schuster, who recently pledged $3 million to the BWH campaign. Their total gifts to the hospital now exceed $4 million.
Women’s health took center stage at a luncheon on Saturday. Fielding questions about CRP testing for heart-attack and stroke risk; fracture risk; and ovarian and breast cancer were Paula Johnson, MD, MPH, executive director of the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology, and the chief of the Division of Women’s Health; Meryl LeBoff, MD; Ross Berkowitz, MD; and Carolyn Kaelin, MD, MPH, FACS. On Sunday, stroke was the featured topic. Specialists Arthur Day, MD, and Patrick O’Gara, MD, discussed warning signs and preventive measures.
