Being Heard: New Bike Racks Added to Shapiro
From left: Joseph O'Leary, Bob Chicarello and Elizabeth Liu helped add more bike racks to the front of the Shapiro Center, to the delight of Kristen Roe (far right) and other BWH cyclists.
Earlier this year, Neurology project manager and bicycle commuter Kristen Roe noticed a problem. She was one of many BWHers who locked her bike to the railing in front of the Shapiro Center by the shuttle pick-up location during the day-what she considered a convenient and safe option.
"But the bikes were piling up, double-parked, intertwined and starting to run out onto the stairs," Roe said. "I love the idea that there are so many people riding to BWH that the railing is completely full, and it looks great to see so many bikes prominently in front of the hospital. But searching for a spot can lead to frustration and may deter people from riding in to work."
So with a well-crafted email, Roe shared her concern with BWH Security and Parking. Meanwhile, they were already taking action.
BWH Security Director Bob Chicarello and Director of Planning and Construction Steve Dempsey worked with Real Estate & Facilities project manager Joseph O'Leary and planner Elizabeth Liu to add new bike racks to the front of Shapiro, providing a more bike-friendly environment for employees and visitors.
"The new racks make me smile every morning," said a grateful Roe. "And the fact that they are more full every day shows how much they are needed and appreciated."
Stay Alert, Stay Safe in and Around LMA
Longwood Medical Area (LMA) is a busy place. Please be alert while walking, driving and biking on Francis Street, Huntington Avenue and elsewhere around the LMA. Leave extra time to account for traffic congestion, and don't ever text and drive (or walk). Your safety and that of your colleagues, BWH patients, families and the community depend on it.
