Every year, BWH recognizes the veterans in our midst and abroad with a special Veterans Day celebration, led by Operations Manager for Security and Parking and retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Bob Donaghue, who was presented with a flag during the ceremony. The following photos capture some of the highlights of this year's event.
12:05 p.m. Chief Operating Officer Mairead Hickey, RN, PhD, invites all veterans "to come forward so we can officially honor you."
12:10 p.m. Larry Nialetz, operations supervisor for Security, walks forward to announce the BWH Color Guard. "March on the colors!"
12:11 p.m. The U.S. Marine Corps enters, and all rise for the National Anthem.
12:18 p.m. Donaghue salutes as "Taps" is played in honor of the late Dr. Joseph Murray, "our hospital's last WWII veteran." Murray was honored and spoke at BWH's 2012 Veterans Day ceremony. His family will soon be presented with a BWH flag.
12:25 p.m. "Now, the last piece of our ceremony, and I think everyone's favorite-the cake," says Donaghue. Hickey does the honor of cutting the first slice. Former Food Services' Catering Manager Patricia Gleason-Claydon, RD, who retired this summer, returned to BWH to make her famous cake.
