Daniel Federman, MD
Daniel Federman, MD, of the Department of Medicine at BWH and senior dean for Alumni Relations and Clinical Teaching at Harvard Medical School, received this year’s Abraham Flexner Award for distinguished service to medical education. Established in 1958, the Flexner Award is presented by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and recognizes extraordinary individual contributions to medical schools and to the medical community as a whole. Federman received the award at the AAMC’s 112th annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on November 3.
Frederick R. Bieber, PhD
Frederick R. Bieber, PhD, a medical geneticist in the Department of Pathology, has been appointed to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). The ABMG, founded in 1980, is one of 24 boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. The ABMG oversees the post-graduate medical training and certification of individuals providing medical genetics services to patients and their families.
O’Neil Britton, MD
O’Neil Britton, MD, has been named the associate director of BWH’s new Office for Minority Career Development. Britton will work alongside the director, when hired, to increase the diversity of the professional staff and enhance BWH’s ability to recruit, retain and develop careers for minority faculty, fellows and residents.
Joseph W. Costa, Jr., DMD Joseph W. Costa, Jr., DMD, chief of Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry and director of the BWH/General Dental Residency Program has been elected to the position of regional vice president of the American Association of Hospital Dentists (AAHD). Costa will serve a two-year term at the AAHD, the largest organization representing hospital dentists.
JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPHJoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine, has been invited to be a regular health columnist and medical expert for Glamour Magazine. Her medical column appears in each monthly issue and addresses key medical concerns of women.
Roseanna H. Means, MD
Roseanna H. Means, MD, was chosen as one of four finalists for the Kenneth B. Schwartz Compassionate Caregiver of the Year Award. Means, a physician in the Department of Medicine, was recognized for her outreach work with homeless women and her leadership role in founding and serving as president of the Women of Means organization. This organization of volunteer physicians provides free medical care and over-the-counter medical supplies for people who are not covered by Medicaid.
Myron Spector, PhD
Myron Spector, PhD, director of Orthopaedic Research at the BWH, has received the 2002 Clemson Award for Applied Biomaterials Research. The Clemson Award is the highest award the Society for Biomaterials gives for career achievement in this category. Spector, who is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery (Biomaterials) at HMS, will be presented with the award at the Society’s annual meeting to be held in Tampa this April.
