Mohs Surgery Center Comes to Faulkner
The Mohs Surgey Center moved from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to Faulkner Hospital. Adding to services available at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Faulkner, the Mohs Center will continue its rich tradition of delivering highly-specialized outpatient treatment for skin cancers to patients in its new suite on the fourth floor at Faulkner, a site with three times as much space.
The new Mohs suite at Faulkner will be licensed by BWH and managed by the Department of Dermatology. The DF/BWCC at Faulkner Hospital also offers programs in breast, thoracic, and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as general oncology.
Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized technique for removing skin cancer. It has become the standard of care for selective facial skin cancer. Developed in the 1940s by Frederick Mohs, MD, the layered approach involves surgically removing the cancer and underlying tissue, freezing and marking the removed tissue with dye and immediately analyzing it under a microscope to pinpoint any remaining cancer. If more cancer is found, the method is repeated as necessary. Simple excisions and non-invasive therapies also are performed.
Mohs Center staff includes surgeon and pathologist, Carl Schanbacher, MD, the center’s director, who has been at Dana-Farber since 2000; several nurses; two histotechnicians; and a new patient coordinator.
