Fraud & Abuse Policy Updated
In January, BWH adopted two important policies that reinforce the concept that all employees share in the responsibility to keep the institution performing at the highest ethical standard and ensure compliance with legal requirements. The Fraud & Abuse Reporting Policy states that every BWH employee has a duty to report known or suspected inappropriate conduct or non-compliant activities so they can be addressed appropriately by the institution. At the same time, the Non-Retaliation Policy makes clear that employees acting in good faith may report such issues or concerns to their supervisor, BWH Compliance, HR or others in confidence that the reporting will not reflect negatively on the employee or affect his or her employment. Indeed, retaliation of any kind is prohibited.

While these policies are required to meet federal requirements under the Deficit Reduction Act, the concepts underlying these policies are not new to the BWH. The hospital has a long-standing commitment to these precepts. At new employee orientation, all employees are given “A Guide to Ethical Standards” and advised of BWH’s commitment to ethical conduct, the basic tenets of the institution’s compliance program, including the designation of a Compliance Officer, and how to contact the compliance office or the anonymous Helpline on any compliance concerns.
