Letter from the BWPO Chairman
Dear Colleagues:
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the annual Brigham and Women’s Physician Recognition Dinner. It’s an honor to work with such a dynamic and talented group of physicians, and gathering with so many of you each year is truly a pleasure.
This year, the BWPO was proud to present recognition awards to five of our colleagues whom we all admire a great deal. Their commitment and dedication to improving care for our patients, to our communities, to each other and to Brigham and Women’s Hospital are truly inspiring.
Dennis P. Orgill, MD, PhD, associate chief in Plastic Surgery, graciously accepted the James S. Winshall Leadership Award. Dennis is well known as a skilled surgeon, an innovative researcher and a dynamic educator. He has played and continues to play key leadership roles at BWH, Partners and Harvard Medical School.
Robert M. Hartley, MD, MSc, medical director of Brookside Community Health Center, received our Clinical Community Service Award. Bob’s commitment to providing top quality care to his primary care patients at Brookside rivals his performance as the physician leader of the same urban health center.
Mari-Kim W. Bunnell, MD, of Obstetrics and Gynecology, received our Clinical Community Service award in recognition of her inspiring work and commitment to patients in Peru. Mari-Kim’s commitment to bringing much needed resources to Chimbote in Peru now inspires BWPO Outreach to Chimbote.
Our Clinical Innovation Award was presented to Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, of Surgery. Working closely with our Dana-Farber colleagues, Monica provides complex and high-risk surgical care to patients on experimental treatment protocols. And through her research, she has changed the evolving field of cancer chemoprevention.
Julian J. Pribaz, MD, received our Clinical Collaboration Award. An accomplished plastic surgeon recognized throughout the country and world, Julian is the program director for the Harvard Plastic Surgery Program, a his tenure began with the merger of three distinct programs into the one he leads now. This was no easy task, and today the program is second to none in molding residents into skilled plastic surgeons.
We also had the privilege of recognizing more than 100 physicians for years of service to BWH and our patients. Each year, we highlight and thank our medical staff for service in five year increments. Our well-deserved recognition went to H. Richard Tyler, MD, of Neurology, and Peter Reich, MD, of Psychiatry, for 55 and 50 years of services, respectively, and many more of you for five to 40 years.
BWH is a special place and it attracts the very best in health care, and each year—with your dedication and commitment—it gets more special.
