Obituary: Lisa Groebl
Lisa Groebl, RN, nurse care facilitator, BWH Department of Emergency Medicine, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 4.
Groebl’s years of service date back to 1977, when she began at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital as a staff nurse in the Clinical Research Center. She was quickly promoted to the Center’s nurse-in-charge and served in that capacity until 1980, when she became a staff nurse in the Emergency Department at the newly opened Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). During her lengthy tenure as staff nurse, Groebl took on additional responsibilities beyond her clinical commitments. She served as the co-chair of BWH’s Disaster Committee with Richard Zane, MD; served as a member of the Safety & Environmental Affairs Committee, the Starfish Nomination Committee, the Preceptor Committee and the Triage Committee; and was the Hazardous Materials Instructor for new RN and ESA employees. She was also the recipient of several nurse recognition, Partners in Excellence and Starfish awards. In March of 2001, Groebl transitioned into her most recent BWH role as the ED’s first nurse care facilitator.
“Lisa will be missed by all members of the BWH family. Her dynamic personality in the Emergency Department always made patients, families and hospital personnel feel like they were special,” said Judith Perron, RN, nurse manager, ED.
“Lisa was a nurse’s nurse, energetic and committed. Any nurse who had a question or problem, Lisa would have the information to help them find the answer or solution. One of the ways Lisa connected to people was with her sense of humor and empathetic nature. Her patients are really going to miss her because she truly advocated for them,” added Christine Dutkiewicz, RN, MSN, nurse manager, Care Coordination.
According to Ron Walls, MD, chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, “Lisa was the quintessential emergency nurse—highly skilled, intelligent, organized and efficient, yet compassionate, caring and gentle. Her special spirit has touched literally everyone with whom she has worked, and every patient and family who have been privileged to receive her care. We have lost a gifted colleague and a dear friend.”
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. in the Bornstein Family Amphitheater. A reception will follow at the Neville House.
