The King Faisal Foundation International Prize honors scientists and scholars whose research results in significant advances that benefit humanity and fundamentally advance their field.
"I am honored to be recognized with such a prestigious award that unites physicians and scientists world-wide in support of the application of biomedical research to the alleviation of human suffering," Gimbrone said. Nine King Faisal prize winners have gone on to win a Nobel Prize.
HMS Dean Joseph Martin and the Council of Academic Deans nominated Gimbrone for the award for his seminal studies on the role of the cellular lining of the cardiovascular system-the vascular endothelium, in diseases such as atherosclerosis and thrombosis, the primary causes of heart attacks and strokes. Gimbrone will receive the prestigious award in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Feb. 18.
