Dear Colleagues:
As we conclude the 2004 fiscal year and look to FY05, we now strive to complete
the course set by the recently announced Strategic Plan, which Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner
Hospitals has teamed up with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to execute over the
next five years.
BWH’s Department of Marketing and Planning has facilitated the effort to
map out clinical objectives needed to stay competitive, within the local and national
health care scene. I thank the Strategic Planning Council, task forces, advisory
groups and specific departments that have made this comprehensive plan possible
and will take us to the next level of integrated patient care delivery.
Much energy will be directed to five centers of excellence at BW/F—cancer
care, cardiovascular services, neurosciences, orthopedics and arthritis and women’s
health - these account for nearly 75 percent of our inpatient volume - as well
as to our core specialty services that account for one-quarter of inpatient volume
and a substantial portion of outpatient business. Supporting growth across the
distributed campus will be an aggressive network development strategy to build
referral relationships.
Growth is necessary in these critical service lines and others in order to achieve
our mission and meet margin targets in support of BW/F’s current and future
infrastructure development. The plan will help us as clinicians fully optimize
existing resources in BW/F’s distributed campus, including the Dana-Farber/Brigham
and Women’s Cancer Center. This distributed campus includes BWH, Faulkner,
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and 850 Boylston.
The goals of the Strategic Plan for the Clinical Enterprise will soon be integrated
with the research and teaching plans currently being developed. Collaboration
on all fronts of the hospital’s mission will help us achieve success with
this comprehensive plan.
Look for more updates and articles focusing on strategy specifics to be included
in future issues of BWH Medical Staff News.
Sincerely,

Andy Whittemore, MD
Chief Medical Officer
