Look Who's
Talking
In anticipation of BWH's first Research Day celebration next
month, we asked members of the BWH Research community and those involved in the
planning of the special Nov. 15 event to tell us what they are most excited
about. Their enthusiasm is contagious; read their answers and mark your
calendar for Research Day Nov. 15!
What are you most
looking forward to about Research Day?

I am looking forward to getting a better understanding of the breadth
of research being conducted at BWH. It's exciting to see how some of the best
minds in the world are trying to move medicine forward, and invigorating to
know that I'm in the midst of it all!

The
opportunity to highlight the amazing and transformative research that takes
place at BWH every day, but usually takes a back seat to the clinical
awesomeness of the hospital. BWH
researchers are changing the nature of health care and health care delivery in
so many ways, and I am looking forward to these extraordinary individuals
having the opportunity to share what they are doing with the rest of the BWH
community.

I am looking forward to the media panel, "Science in the Media:
How to Turn Your Research into Headlines." There will be some well-known people
from the media-Ron Winslow, deputy bureau chief for health and science at The
Wall Street Journal; Gideon Gil, health and science editor at The Boston
Globe; John Lauerman, a reporter at Bloomberg News who covers science,
medicine and education; and Jennifer Berryman, executive editor and producer at
Boston's ABC affiliate, WCVB-TV. They will share their insider tips on how they
select the science stories for their outlets. This is a great opportunity for
researchers to ask media experts what science news makes the cut, and get an
answer straight from the experts themselves. Also, any researchers who think
their work should be in the WSJ, Boston Globe, etc. will have the
opportunity to present it to the editors of these well-respected media outlets.
This is a rare opportunity for researchers to pitch directly to editors and
reporters, and I think it is perhaps one of the most valuable events taking
place on Research Day for researchers.

I am excited about showcasing the
amazing scope of BWH research that is changing clinical care. BWH Research Day will certainly
celebrate "science as part of the cure." I also hope that the day encourages patients, families and
our Boston community to join us in supporting BWH's efforts to advance human health!

It's impossible for me to answer this as I am looking forward to
all of it - sharing our research with a large audience, recognizing and
celebrating our fabulous researchers, seeing the 156 posters on display very
visibly in the hospital, attending the session on BWH's strategic commitment to
discovery and innovation, hearing all the fabulous discussions in the mini-symposia
and listening to Dr. Gawande's keynote. It's going to be a great day!

We do such an incredible amount of very important biomedical
research here at BWH - I'm really looking forward to sharing the extent and
depth of that research with as many of our employees as possible, as well as
with our patients, visitors from pharma and biotech who will be joining us, as
well as donors and members of the community. When people see the kind of
work in that is being done in their backyard, they are going to be
amazed.

BWH Research Administration and Research Day Ambassador
I've been working
in research at BWH for 20 years (my entire adult life) and this is the first time
ever that we have had a full day celebration such as this. I am so
excited to share my love of working in the research community at BWH with
anyone and everyone who I talk to that day. I've asked my husband to call
in sick so he can come and listen to the presentations and see how my work in
Research Administration impacts the discoveries and innovations that happen
here. I plan to spend the whole day as a research ambassador and enjoy
every minute of sharing my love for BWH Research.
