Awards and Honors
Jacqueline MacNeil, MSN, RN, of the MICU, received the 2009 Bioethics Award, which supports her attendance to the Intensive Bioethics Course offered by the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. This internationally recognized course runs in June.
Pam Thomas, RN, nurse in-charge on Tower 6A, was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society in April.
Degrees and Professional Certifications
Sara Carney, BS, RN, PCCN, and Julie Howe, RN, PCCN, both from Tower 14CD, successfully earned their Progressive Care Nursing Certifications in February.

Marsha Charlton, BS, RN, of Tower 16CD, earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston in January. She graduated magna cum laude.

Sandra Harmon

Sandra L. Harmon, MSN, RN, nurse manager of the Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery, recently earned her master’s degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt.
Fatima Nottingham MSN, RN, of the Thoracic ICU, earned her master’s degree in Nursing in May from Northeastern University, specializing as an acute care nurse practitioner. Nottingham also was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, Gamma Epsilon Chapter this year.

Alice Morrison, RN, CCM, of Care Coordination, gained her certification as a Certified Case Manager (CCM) in January from the Commission for Case Manager Certification.
Christine Dutkiewicz, MSN, RN, CCM, Joanne Hogan, MS, RN, and Lisa Wichmann, MS, RN, participated in a National Case Management Conference Learning Tour, where they spoke about Care Coordination at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Float pool nurse Bonnie Manchur, BSN, RN, recently earned her Wound Care Certification through the National Alliance of Wound Care.
Posters, Presentations and Publications
Rachel Knott, BS, RN, PCCN, and Ronna Zaremski, MSN, RN, CCRN, nurse educator, both of Tower 14CD, presented their poster: “Falls TIPS: Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety,” during the 12th annual NICHE Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Stefan Strojwas, BS, RN, CCRN, clinical educator in the Burn/Trauma SICU on Tower 7, and Carol Daddio Pierce, MS, RN, CCRN, ACNP, clinical educator of the MICU, presented a poster titled “Introducing New CRRT Technology with a Super-user Educational Model” at the International CRRT Conference held in San Diego in February.
Donna M. Rosborough, MS, RN, Cardiac Surgery, presented a poster, “A Retrospective Review and Analysis of Discharge Disposition of Cardiac Surgery Patients Between January 2004 and December 2008,” during the Emerging Trends Impacting Acute/Critical Care Nursing Leaders Conference co-sponsored by Regis College and the Greater Boston Chapter of AACN in April.
Lana Callahan, RN, OCN, Susan McDonald, BSN, RN, OCN, both nurses in-charge on Tower 6D, and Escel Stanghellini, MSN, RN, quality program manager for Heme/Onc/BMT, were among a group of BWHers who presented the poster “Medication review and hourly nursing rounds: An evidence-based approach reduces falls on oncology inpatient units,” during the Oncology Nursing Society 34th Annual Congress at San Antonio, Texas.
Carol A. Gleason, MM, RN, CRRN, CCM, LRC, BCPC and Carol Ann Orrico, BSN, RN, presented a poster, “Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation: Case Managers’ Strategic Interventions,” during the National Institute for Case Management/American Case Management Association national Conference in Boston.
During the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses 41st Annual Educational Meeting in March in Las Vegas, the following staff nurses presented posters:
Jonathan Jehle, BSN, RN, Neuroscience ICU, “Weekly Multidisciplinary Ethics Rounds in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit.”
Mary Nelson, CNRN, Claudia McCarthy, RN, both of the Neuroscience Intermediate Care Unit, “The Key to Locked-In Syndrome.”
Vincent M. Vacca, MSN, RN, CCRN, of the Neuroscience ICU, “How to Assess and Interpret Extra-Ocular Movements.” Vacca also gave an oral presentation, “Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease—What Are the Differences?”
Eileen McMahon Bowen, BSN, RN, CNRN, and Deborah McDonnell, BSN, RN, both of the Neuroscience ICU, “A Time to Reflect, a Time to Remember.”
Sherri Lin Nobriga, RN, of Endoscopy, presented “Agile Patency Capsule: Clearing the Path for Capsule Endoscopy,” during the 36th Annual Course of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates in St. Louis in May. She also lectured on the accessory tools that are available to provide quality capsule studies to patients with contraindications.
