Nurses, Social Workers Honored by House Staff

Throughout her time at BWH, Internal Medicine Resident Zuzana Tothova, MD, PhD, has learned from many people as she rotates from unit to unit across the hospital. This spring, she got to personally thank one person who has taught her a great deal about making a difference for patients: Oncology Nurse Myra Muir, RN.
“Myra is one of the most amazing nurses that I have worked with,” Tothova told the audience who packed Carrie Hall during the June 1 ceremony. “I remember multiple occasions where her wise, calm and thoughtful demeanor, and her care and kindness, really made a difference in patients’ care. I always knew my patients were in the most excellent hands when she was taking care of them.”
Muir was one of 17 BWH and Faulkner employees honored by house staff for their contributions in teaching BWH residents about patient care. This year, residents also paid tribute to social workers in addition to nurses.
During the ceremony, residents came to the podium and described how each recipient has made an impact on their career.
“I have a vivid memory of managing a very sick patient with Anita Wright in the ICU,” Resident Will Grandin, MD, told the audience. “Anita was constantly thinking about our management of the patient and asked me great questions about whether we should consider various therapies. She gave us pertinent updates throughout the night and always knew exactly the information that we needed to make management decisions. The patient did very well, and that was in large part due to Anita’s care.”
Residents also praised the overall commitment and dedication of nurses throughout the hospital.
They go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our patients receive the care they need, according to Emily Wroe, MD, resident, who nominated Care Coordination Nurse Carol Gleason, RN.
“One particularly notable incident was when Carol worked many hours helping me get an expensive medication covered for a patient. The medication was pretty much that patient’s only treatment option, and Carol worked hard to get him access to the medication long after she’d been moved to another team and wasn’t even covering us anymore. She made a huge difference for him,” Wroe said.
In total, residents nominated and acknowledged nearly 80 nurses and Patient Care Services staff during the ceremony. “Thank you for being there to guide us and teach us,” said Lydia Pace, MD, MPH, Internal Medicine senior resident. “You consistently provide valuable input that immensely improved our team’s management of our patients. You make a huge difference for both the patients and for our team of residents.”
