Coherence in Nursing Paper Given in Ireland

Patricia Reid Ponte, RN, DNSc (right), and Rosanna DeMarco, PhD, RN, ACRN (left),
represented a team of authors at the International Nursing Research Conference
in Dublin, Ireland. Reid Ponte and DeMarco presented their paper “Organizational
Restructuring and Newly Employed RNs in Professional Practice,” regarding
nurses and the importance of coherence. “Today’s nurse leader is challenged
to create a practice environment that fosters multidisciplinary collaboration,
professional development and a culture of safety…When nurses have a coherence
about their work setting, they are more likely to feel confident that their care
of patients and families is fully supported by the organization in which they
work,” the authors wrote. The paper was based on a collaborative research
project with Northeastern University and the BWH Nursing Department. Funding for
the research project was provided by Sigma Theta Tau, the Kravitz Award and the
National Nursing Staff Development Organization, and research for the paper was
conducted by a group of then-graduate nursing students, including Judy Catalan,
MS, RN; Jonathan Judy, MS, RN, and Rosemarie Spada, MS, RN.
