When Sandy Harmon, BSN, RN, assistant nurse manager in the NICU, and Maggie Hickey, MSN, RN, nurse manager of the Center for Labor and Birth, heard about the Blood Donor Center’s Department Donor Days campaign, they jumped on the opportunity to get involved. The interest flourished and resulted in the first ever department-based, on-site blood drive at BWH, held in the NICU Solarium.
“We responded to Department Donor Days, and it mushroomed into all of the Connors Center for Women and Newborns,” Harmon said of Monday’s event.
The on-site blood drive made for a busy day for the Blood Donor Center, which screened 33 donors and collected 22 units of blood from volunteers. “There was a really great response,” said Anne Roberts, RN, of the Blood Donor Center.
Lee Enright, RN, of the Center for Labor and Birth, tries to donate regularly. “We sent someone down to donate every half hour,” she said of the Center for Labor and Birth.
Harmon added, “It’s been amazing. We’re hoping to do this for the night staff soon.”
