At last month’s BWH Staff Readiness Fair, staff received dozens of safety tips from hospital departments to help prepare for The Joint Commission hospital survey, which will occur anytime between now and May. Be sure to brush up on the following tips and visit BWHPikeNotes.org for a photo slideshow featuring many helpful reminders.
Where’s your ID badge? If you’re not wearing it above your waist, you’re not in compliance. Be sure your badge is visible at all times and that you wear it above the waist, whether on a lanyard or clipped on.
Always Sign, Date and Time. All entries in medical record documentation must be signed, dated and timed. All hand-written notes start with the date at the top of the entry and end with a clinician’s signature, date, time and page number.
Look Alike, Sound Alike: High Alert Medications. The BWH Drug Safety Committee has designed a poster featuring high alert medications and look-alike, sound-alike medications. Visit BWHPikeNotes.org to download a copy of the pdf.
Don’t Guess. During the survey, remain calm. If you don’t understand a question from the surveyor, ask him and or her to repeat it or explain. If you don’t know the answer, tell the surveyor whom you would contact to find out or reference a specific manual.
Help is Just a Phone Call Away. Clinical Compliance is available to help all employees with Joint Commission related information and communication at 617-732-6442.
