The BWH Co-ed Basketball League wrapped up last month with Pharmacy’s Medicine Men team winning another championship title—its fifth in the 11-year history of the league.
The 16-member team, which is made up of Pharmacy staff and others from around the hospital, captured the title after squeezing a one-point win during the semifinals against Team First to Many, and a two-point win against the Brigham Ballers. All games were played at Basketball City in Boston.
“It was an exciting season until the last buzzer,” said Paul Szumita, clinical pharmacy practice manager, who was a player and coach. “During the final game, our opponent had a chance to win it with a last minute three-point shot. So it was pretty close all the way.”
The Medicine Men team, which posted an 8-1 regular season record, was led all season by the Department of Food Services’ Alex Mendoza and Pharmacy’s Greg Gooding. The team also received key contributions from Tower 15CD staff nurse Amanda Kordis and first-year Pharmacy resident Eva Rybak, who played basketball in Poland’s Division 2 semi-professional league almost nine years ago.
“I didn’t realize how much I missed playing,” said Rybak. “But what I missed the most was the bond you form with other players. It’s extra special when they are your coworkers. I can’t wait to play next year.”
