Since 1999, a team of runners made up of Deloitte & Touche employees, family and friends has joined Team Brigham to raise money for breast cancer programs in memory of Ellen Gabriel, a co-worker who lost her battle against breast cancer in 1998.
Their commitment to her memory and to raise funds to benefit the hospital’s community health programs focused on breast cancer services remains strong as they take on this year’s Boston Marathon for the 11th year in a row.
“If Ellen could see us now, she would be very proud and amazed of the effort and commitment of so many people,” said Robert Sprague, senior manager of Forensic and Dispute Services for Deloitte & Touche.
Sprague, who worked with Gabriel, is among the original team members who have tackled the Boston Marathon in her name six times. “Every year, the race is a little different—especially now because I’m getting older, but every time I run I’m reminded of Ellen’s courage and kind spirit,” he said.
This year, Sprague will tackle the 26.2-mile race along with 13 other firm members from all over the country, contributing to the $830,000 the team has raised since 1999. “We’re hoping next year we can break the $1 million mark. Ellen would be very proud of such a great achievement,” said Sprague.
