Tower 15CD nurses and Patient Care Services organized a mobility device drive in May to help the people of Haiti and others in need around the world get back on their feet. With help from 850 Bolyston St., Faulkner Hospital and Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center at Patriot Place, the team collected 356 pairs of crutches, 130 canes, 19 wheelchairs, 102 walkers and 31 leg braces.
Mary Allendorf Burns, RN, Margaret Costello, PhD, RN, unit coordinator Marvin Gonzales, Kathleen Harrington, BSN, RN, Charlotte Jones, RN, Leslie McKinney, RN, nursing director Suzanne Silvernail, MSN, RN, Sarah Thompson, MSN, RN, and Leo Buckley, executive director of Business Services for Patient Care, loaded the devices from the storage trailer into a U-Haul June 5. They drove to Raynham and met employees from Collins Sports Medicine Company, who carefully helped pack 12 pallets of new and gently used equipment before shipping it to Physicians for Peace in Virginia.
“Physicians for Peace said that our shipment is the third or fourth largest they have received to date since the earthquake,” said Thompson, who spearheaded the collection with Jones. “Thank you to everyone who donated; we are thrilled with the amount of equipment we collected, and we know it will help patients in Haiti and other parts of the world immensely.”
