Giving something back to the NICU
Jessica Giunta and her twin brother Brad were born at BWH on April 30, 1991, at just 28 weeks gestation. Now, more than 12 years later, Jessica has been presented the Bronze Award by the Girl Scouts for her charitable efforts in coordinating the knitting of hats for premature infants. A member of Troop 495 of Bolton, Massachusetts, Jessica compiled a total of 270 hats, knitted by the troop themselves as well as the Bolton community. She donated the hats to BWH and to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. Jessica has since been presented the Bronze Award, the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn, for her wonderful efforts. The Bronze Award shows that a Junior Girl Scout has made a promise to help others, has improved her community and the world, and has become the best she can be. “It was just lovely to see Jessica and Brad after all of these years,” said Brenda Reed, RN, who was the twins’ primary care nurse during their time in the NICU. “Jessica has worked so hard and gone to such great lengths to organize this knitting project for other premature babies. What a wonderful accomplishment."
