On Wednesday, June 25, 22 BWH employees were among those honored at the graduation ceremony for the Boston Health Care and Research Training Institute--an innovative community-employer partnership, providing multiple levels of training for health care employees. BWH graduates will now pursue careers as radiology technologists, pharmacy technicians, nurses, laboratory technologists, patient care assistants, administrative personnel, medical coding professionals, and surgical technicians. “This Institute has brought together competing institutions for the greater good, allowing the opportunity to build a strong, skilled, and diverse Boston workforce for the future,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, who was selected as the ceremony’s keynote speaker. The BWH graduates spent the spring season studying a variety of courses while placed in a range of front-line positions at the hospital, including Nutrition Services, Environmental Services, Medical Records, Transport, and Patient Care Services. The Institute’s funding comes from the Neighborhood Jobs Trust of the City of Boston and the BEST (Building Essential Skills through Training) Initiative, a state program that brings together funding from several of the Commonwealth’s education and workforce development agencies. Additionally, the program is funded by Fleet Charitable Trusts; John Merck Fund; Herman and Frieda Miller Foundation; Hyams Foundation, Boston Foundation; and the Urban Initiative Fund.
