The Division of Sleep Medicine became the newest division of the Department of Medicine on March 1, 2001. Prior to March 1, Sleep Medicine was incorporated into the Endocrine Division of the Department of Medicine. Charles Czeisler, PhD, MD (pictured, right) is the chief of BWH’s new Sleep Medicine Division, which will incorporate clinical, research and teaching activities surrounding sleep disorders. This will include enhancing its world-renowned programs on the diagnosis and treament of sleep-related breathing disorders. David White, MD, (pictured, left) will serve as the Division’s associate director. “I fully expect that this new Division will take a national leadership role in the emerging discipline of sleep medicine,” said Victor Dzau, MD, as he announced the formation of the Division before the February 2 “Sleep, Wakefullness and the Human Circadian Clock” Grand Rounds led by Czeisler.
