Scott Shikora, MD, FACS, was recently named director of the BW/F Center for Metabolic Health and Bariatric Surgery.
Shikora brings more than 20 years of experience in the bariatric field and was recently the director of the Bariatric Weight and Wellness Center at Tufts Medical Center, where he spent the last 16 years.
As the director for the Center for Metabolic Health and Bariatric Surgery, Shikora leads its interdisciplinary team that each year performs more than 500 weight-loss operations both at Brigham and Women’s and Faulkner Hospitals.
He also continues to foster BWH’s excellent care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases and advocates for translational research aimed at reducing the incidence of diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
“My goals are to continue carrying forward the Brigham’s mission as well as enhancing the bariatric program to an even more prominent level where we continue to be recognized nationally and internationally for the best treatment, that combines science and cutting-edge research to deliver the best possible outcome,” he said.
During the last two decades, Shikora has been active in the bariatric field and is currently the chair for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Training Committee. He served as president for the ASMBS, the world’s largest organization dedicated to bariatric surgery. He is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders. Recently, he was appointed editor in chief of Obesity Surgery, the preeminent international journal of bariatric surgery.
He received his MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York and completed his surgical residency and a fellowship at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston.
