HIP Awards Funding for Three Innovative Projects

HIP kicked off as CIO Sue Schade, left, came together with Marc Boomhower, RN; Ali Bahadori, MD; Sanjay Pathak, MD, vice president of Surgical Services and Imaging; Anuj Dalal, MD; Eric Poon, MD, MPH, IS director of Clinical Informatics; and Donna Fraser, IS senior project specialist.
The BW/F Healthcare Information Technology Innovation Program (HIP) in January funded three innovative projects to improve patient care, and now is accepting proposals for the program’s second cycle.
Anuj Dalal, MD, Ali Bahadori, MD, both of the Department of Medicine, and Marc Boomhower, BSN, RN, clinical staff nurse on Tower 16AB, received funding from HIP, which seeks new ideas from staff on how to improve care through technology. Bahadori is working on a clinician portal; Boomhower on a nursing handoff tool and Dalal on an e-mail notification system for post-discharge test results.
Recommended priorities for Cycle 2 proposals include improving patients’ experience, clinical decision support, data mining and secondary use of data, novel ways to capture clinical data, personalized medicine and clinician education. The HIP Selection Committee co-chaired by Eric Poon, MD, MPH, BWH IS director of Clinical Informatics, and Sanjay Pathak, vice president of Surgical Services and Imaging, will review proposals and recommend projects for funding to the BW/F Clinical Executive Committee.
The application process has two rounds: preliminary proposals and full proposals. The details of the proposals, the program and the timeline are available at this link:

By May 22, applicants should submit a three-page, double-spaced preliminary proposal, per HIP guidelines, for initial review by the HIP Selection Committee. Applicants will be notified of results in early July.
Applicants chosen for the next step will be asked to develop a full proposal, per HIP guidelines, for a mid-August submission. These proposals will be reviewed by the HIP Selection Committee and approved by the BW/F Clinical Executive Committee. Applicants will be notified in early October.
Submit all proposals to Donna Fraser, senior project specialist in the Office of the CIO, by e-mail at dfraser1@partners.org
