In BWH tradition, Michael Gimbrone, MD, was honored for his leadership as chair of the Department of Pathology with the unveiling of a new portrait to grace the walls of the Bornstein Amphitheater.
"Dr. Gimbrone has always been the standard bearer for the highest quality," said BW/F President Betsy Nabel, MD. "His commitment to the growth and development of his students and colleagues is paramount to his career as a scientist, and is the hallmark of who he is."
Gimbrone, who stepped away from his role as chair of BWH Pathology on March 1 after more than a decade of service, has a long list of achievements to his name. He established the Vascular Research Division in the Department of Pathology and was named the first director of the Center for Excellence in Vascular Biology at BWH and HMS, which he will continue to lead.
He worked to develop and implement forward-looking programs in the department that wove together research and translational medicine. These include strengthening the development of the Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women's Center for Molecular Onco-Pathology, realizing the benefits to patient care of personalized medicine through the creation of the Center for Advanced Molecular Diagnostics, and successfully launching PROFILE, a major collaboration between BWH and Dana-Farber, that focuses on the molecular genetic diagnosis of cancer.
"Along with sound judgment and calm perspective, Dr. Gimbrone always brings compassion and heart to every interaction," said Nabel. "His love and dedication to teaching, provoking and introducing a dialogue amongst a curious set of residents and fellows is at the core of his passion. Dr. Gimbrone's legacy will live on in these programs, and the BWH culture will be forever impacted because of his time as our leader, our mentor, our friend."
