As CSPH director, Finlayson has championed the center's growth specifically in the research areas of health services, education and global health related to surgery. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, with particular interest in benign and malignant diseases of the colon, abdominal wall hernias and biliary disease. During his time at BWH, Finlayson has also overseen the mentorship of young faculty and trainees at BWH and Harvard Medical School, helping many develop their individual research careers.
"As the director of the CSPH, Dr. Finlayson has provided incredible leadership and thoughtful organization to the center and to our department," said Michael Zinner, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery. "Because of his unique skill set, we were able to achieve new heights in terms of national and international recognition. He will be sorely missed, but leading the University of Utah's Department of Surgery in efforts to transform surgical care delivery will be a tremendous opportunity for him."
Before joining BWH in October 2011, Finlayson spent a decade at Dartmouth Medical School, where he was vice chair of the Department of Surgery, director of the Surgical Residency Program and associate professor of Surgery and of Community and Family Medicine. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School and his MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.
