Harmon Recieves McDermott Scholarship

Dick Flavin, Paul McDermott, Sandra Harmon, Ellen Clemence, Kristin Alt Styer and Doug McDermott celebrated the life of Nancy McDermott with the annual Nancy King McDermott, RN, MSN, Scholarship Award.
Sandra Harmon, BSN, RN, of the NICU, in November received the seventh Nancy King McDermott, RN, MSN, Scholarship Award, which honors a BWH nurse who is recognized as a future leader in the profession in October.
“I love nursing today as much as the day I started nearly 30 years ago,” said Harmon, who is pursuing her masters in Nursing Health Systems Management at Vanderbilt University.
Kristin Alt Styer, MSN, RN, who won the award last year, reflected on its meaning. “It’s powerful to receive an award given in memory of someone like Nancy who means so much to BWH,” she said.
Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, remembered McDermott as a mentor. “Nancy is part of our foundation as a nursing department and institution,” she said.
Paul McDermott, Nancy’s husband, and their son Doug celebrated with family friend Dick Flavin, the poet laureate for the Boston Red Sox. Paul McDermott wore his red socks for the occasion.
