Peri-operative Nurses Teach Integrative Care

Nurses gathered in the PACU in November to learn about expanding their education personally and professionally through integrative care techniques. The nine-member Peri-operative Integrative Care Committee described and demonstrated therapeutic touch, reiki, relaxation responses and music therapy, as BWH’s harpist Nancy Kleiman played.
“This committee and its work are extremely important to our efforts to tie the human touch in with our systems-based work,” said Peggy Doyle, RN, director of Peri-operative Services.
The presentation included the benefits of various therapies, such as decreasing stress, relieving aches and pains, increasing comfort and feeling calm. Patients are requesting these therapies for a variety of reasons, from preparing for surgery to dealing with chronic pain. “The patient feedback is unbelievable,” said Doyle
Patricia Reilly, MSN, RN, Nursing’s program manager of Integrative Care, said these types of therapies promote balance and well being for both the patient and caregiver.
“This work is about transforming us as individuals to better care for ourselves and our patients,” Reilly said.
