Precourt Named Manager of Cardiac Surgery Intermediate Care Unit

Justin Precourt, MSN, RN, in July was named nurse manager of Shapiro 6/7, Cardiac Surgery Intermediate Care Unit.
“I’m honored to work with such a compassionate and dedicated staff,” said Precourt, who is working with a team of about 100, including unit coordinators, patient care assistants, and registered nurses. “The group strives to provide the best care to patients, at all times.”
The unit is the first in the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center to roll out comfort rounds, a type of hourly rounding on patients that has proved successful in BWH’s Oncology units. “This is the biggest patient care initiative we’re working on right now,” said Precourt.
Nurses and patient care assistants are implementing the rounds, which call for hourly checks on each patient to inquire about pain, positioning, safety and toileting. “The goal is to anticipate patient needs, increase patient satisfaction and improve patient care by decreasing the prevalence of falls and pressure ulcers. Comfort Rounds causes us to rethink the way we provide care to patients and brings the nurse and the patient care assistant back to the bedside,” Precourt said.
In his most recent role as the hospital’s cardiovascular access manager, Precourt facilitated the admission of cardiovascular patients from other hospitals to BWH, working closely with physicians, nurses and Admitting staff in doing so.
Precourt joined BWH in 2003 as a staff nurse in the Intermediate Float Pool and then became a staff nurse in the Cardiology Inpatient Unit. Prior to joining BWH, he traveled as a registered nurse with American Mobile Healthcare based in San Diego.
Precourt completed his MSN and will receive the degree this December from St. Joseph’s College in Maine. He received his BSN from Northeastern University.
